Cubs Fans’ Rain Delay Nightmare: Did It Change the World Series?

Game 7 of the 2016 World Series already had everything: history, pressure, blown leads, extra innings, and two franchises desperate to end decades of heartbreak. Then came the most controversial pause of the night: the rain delay.

During the Michael Hirn episode of The Chris & Mike Show, the guys revisit the moment Cleveland had all the momentum. The Indians had just completed an incredible comeback, tying the game in the eighth inning after trailing the Cubs. Progressive Field was rocking, Chicago looked stunned, and suddenly it felt like Cleveland might finish the comeback.

Then the rain came.

The game was stopped before the 10th inning, and whether you believe the delay was simply Mother Nature or jokingly call it the “fake rain delay,” there’s no denying what happened afterward: the Cubs regrouped.

Chicago players famously gathered during the delay, reset mentally, and when play resumed, the Cubs scored twice in the top of the 10th before holding on 8–7 to win their first World Series championship in 108 years.

For Cubs fans, it became part of one of the greatest nights in baseball history. For Cleveland fans, it raises one of sports' ultimate what-ifs:

What happens if that rain delay never occurs?

Momentum can't be measured on a scoreboard, but anyone who has played or watched sports knows when you can feel it shift.

And on that night in Cleveland, a few minutes of rain may have helped change baseball history forever.
