Gerrit Bult Returns: Acting, Judo, Fitness & One Hell of a Life | Episode 231
Gerrit Bult is back on The Chris & Mike Show, and somehow the encore conversation gets even more interesting than the first.
Gerrit has lived one of those lives where you start talking about one subject and suddenly you're somewhere completely unexpected. He's worked as an actor, model, professional wrestler, stunt performer, and even an alien space monster in a video game. 😂
This time, Gerrit takes Chris and Mike behind the scenes of working on HBO's The Righteous Gemstones, including the reality of filming a nude scene during COVID and the role intimacy directors play in making actors feel protected and comfortable on set.
Then we go from Hollywood to the judo mat.
After 37 years away from competitive judo, Gerrit decided to step back into competition. He talks about competing in multiple divisions, going against younger opponents, grinding through exhausting ground fighting, and discovering the hard way that maybe reading the tournament rules beforehand isn't such a bad idea.
The conversation also dives into lifting weights and staying strong as we get older. Gerrit, Chris, and Mike compare training philosophies, resistance training, negative reps, recovery, nutrition, consistency, and what it really takes to keep building muscle instead of accepting that getting older automatically means getting weaker.
And because it's The Chris & Mike Show, there are plenty of rabbit holes along the way, including Gerrit's acting demo reel and upcoming projects, stories involving Steven Seagal, former training partners, relationships and fitness, professional wrestling, and even why embracing the shaved head can be strangely liberating.
Underneath all the laughs and crazy stories, though, there's a pretty simple message to this episode:
You don't have to stop challenging yourself because you're getting older.
Gerrit stepped back onto a judo mat after 37 years. He's still training. He's still acting. He's still pursuing new opportunities. And he's still willing to put himself in situations that make life interesting.
Discipline. Reinvention. Staying strong. And refusing to become a spectator in your own life.
That's Gerrit Bult.
And that's why we had him back.
