Does Headgear Really Prevent CTE?

Headgear looks like protection, but when it comes to brain health, the truth is complicated. Sure, it saves you from cuts, bruises, and black eyes—but it doesn’t stop the brain from rattling around inside the skull. That’s why concussions and the long-term risk of CTE are still on the table, even with padding. Some athletes even take more risks wearing headgear, thinking they’re invincible, which only adds to the danger. At the end of the day, headgear has its place in safety, but the only real way to lower CTE risk is to limit head impacts in the first place.
