The Skinny Stance in Boxing

The skinny stance is a boxing posture where a fighter keeps their feet closer together, creating a narrower base than the traditional wide stance. This setup emphasizes speed, agility, and quick movement, making it easier to pivot, slip punches, and move in and out of range.

The tradeoff is stability. With less balance under heavy pressure, fighters risk being pushed off line or losing power in their punches. A skinny stance reduces the ability to fully “sit down” on shots, which can limit knockout power.

It’s most useful for defensive and counter-punching styles, where mobility and evasiveness matter more than raw power. Many fighters switch between a skinny stance for movement and a wider base for planting and delivering strong combinations, showing that versatility is often the key.
