College film sets can get pretty wild. Chris remembers playing a homeless man in a student short, and he committed so fully to an arrest scene that he was banging around in the back of a police car. Students who saw it thought it was real, crowded around the car, and started chanting, “Let him out!” The filmmakers had to stop and explain that they were shooting a movie.
Shadow C. LaValley also shares a look back at one of his early student films, where he played a love interest. It was part of the hands-on experience that helped him learn by getting out there and acting, rather than only thinking about the craft in a classroom.
From an improvised performance that fooled an audience to early roles that helped launch an acting journey, these memories show how unpredictable student filmmaking can be. Have you ever seen a film shoot that looked so real you thought it was happening?
