Shadow C. LaValley’s name carries a story of reinvention. After going through difficult experiences in his younger years, he wanted to reshape his life and leave behind the associations tied to his old name. He kept the “C” from Christopher, moving it to his middle name, and chose LaValley from his mother’s family—a nod to his French Canadian roots.
The name Shadow also reaches back to his childhood in central New York. When his sisters were off doing their own thing and his mother was busy with the demands of home, Shadow often found comfort in the family dog, who was his best friend. Naming himself Shadow became a way to honor that bond and a meaningful part of his past.
His story is a reminder that a name can be more than something we’re given: it can hold family history, preserve a treasured memory, and express who we choose to become. What story does your name carry?
